University of Hawaiʻi-Mānoa faculty discussed news media and Sino-U.S. relations with Peking University faculty and China journalists and guests at the 3rd annual Sino-U.S. Media Forum in Beijing recently.

The goal of the three forums has been to build bridges and improve understanding between the U.S. and China. The forums are unique because they foster discussions among academics, journalists and community leaders.

The first forum was launched in Beijing on Oct. 27, 2013 at Peking University School of Journalism and Communication by Dr. HE Shu of PKU and Dr. Ann Auman of the UHM School of Communications. The focus was comparative media. The second Forum was held at UHM July 9-10, 2014, and the focus was online and digital media in shaping global relationships. The fourth forum will be in Honolulu again.

College of Social Sciences Dean Denise Konan gave opening remarks, and Dr. Maya Soetoro-Ng conveyed a message of peace and described her family ties to China. She is the Director of Community Outreach and Global Learning for the College’s Matsunaga Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution.

School of Communications Chair Professor Ann Auman presented the challenges of doing global media ethics, and Assistant Professor Ji Young Kim spoke on the media’s impact on policy making in Korea.

Dean Konan and Mr. Jeffrey Lau, Honolulu lawyer, businessman and former President of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, were interviewed on stage with business representatives and scholars by CCTV/News Dialogue anchor YANG Rui on Sino-U.S. trade and economic relations.
